I am Bruce Lee is a documentary released in 2013. It is one of my favorite documentaries (I also like A Warrior’s Journey). It is reasonably priced, comes in Blu Ray, and has awesome special features.
From the product description:
I Am Bruce Lee is the amazing story of one of the greatest icons ever to enter the public consciousness, the first film to truly tell Bruce Lee’s story in his own words and actions, as well as through the eyes of the international stars from the worlds of film, television, music and sports.
Bruce Lee Interviews
I liked the format of the documentary which intersperses archival interviews of Bruce Lee and more current interviews of family and friends. Scenes of Bruce Lee are taken primarily from his Hollywood Audition and The Lost Interview. We also see many clips from his movies including Enter the Dragon and the Game of Death.
Special Features
There are many important people interviewed for the documentary with a close connection to Bruce Lee. This includes family members such as his wife Linda Lee Cadwell and daughter Shannon Cadwell. It includes his friends and JKD instructors Dan Inosanto and Richard Bustillo. Also, Enter the Dragon co-star Bob Wall. I wasn’t as impressed with the interviews with others that have no connection to Bruce Lee. While it is nice to hear how Bruce Lee impacted them, I would rather see more first hand accounts.
Contributing Interviews
There are multiple special features included with the Blu Ray. I especially liked seeing the entire 9 minutes of Bruce Lee’s Hollywood Audition. In it he answers questions about his background and martial arts. He also demonstrates some Gung Fu moves which are startling fast. Another special feature includes actual clips of him training in his backyard.
Final Thoughts
This is a great documentary. It is cheap and easy to get. I highly recommend it. Between this and A Warrior’s Journey documentary you get a great picture of the life of Bruce Lee.
