The Bruce Lee Podcast – A Valuable Resource

A great Bruce Lee resource to check out is the official Bruce Lee Podcast. Shannon Lee, the daughter of Bruce Lee, and her co-host and friend Sharon Lee describe the philosophy and life of Bruce Lee in each episode. The podcast began in 2016 and it is currently in its 6th season.

I discovered the podcast when I was researching Bruce Lee’s martial arts. I was looking for more details about Jeet Kune Do. I must admit at first I was disappointed because I was looking for a podcast centered around his martial arts and not his philosophy.

I gave it a try because Shannon Lee was the host and I thought she would have valuable information to share. I’m glad I did because I quickly discovered that Bruce Lee was as accomplished in philosophy as he was in martial arts. I have gained valuable ideas to improve my life based on this podcast and would strongly recommend it to others even if you aren’t generally interested in philosophy.

Format

The format of the podcast has changed over time but often includes an in-depth discussion about a philosophy topic followed by two smaller segments. The AAHA (Awesome Asians and Hapas) segment includes focusing on an influential individual of Asian descent. Examples include Yo-Yo Ma (musican), George Takei (actor), and I. M. Pei (architect). The last segment is the Bruce Lee moment and includes people sharing how Bruce Lee has influenced their life.

Types of Episodes

Typical episodes include Shannon and Sharon having an in-depth discussion about a philosophy topic. Examples include change, honesty, recovering from setbacks, joy, and energy. Occasionally, topics might include non-philosophy such as fitness, nutrition, or martial arts.

Linda Lee Cadwell

Linda Lee Cadwell, Bruce Lee’s wife, has appeared several times as a guest. These episodes are extra special because she provides lots of detail on the personal side of Bruce Lee, his love for family. and how he dealt with adversity.

Other Guests

They have had a variety of guest join the podcast to speak on their Bruce Lee related experiences. This includes fans, authors, martial artists and actors.

Podcast Challenge

Beginning around Episode 49 they started the Podcast Challenge. They created a contest and challenged listeners to complete three items daily: affirmations, health, and harmony. The affirmations included a list of things a person can do to improve their life such as being present in the moment and authentic. Health involved answering the question “My body would feel better if…” and could include exercise or diet. Harmony was stopping yourself from saying anything negative about others and not having negative thoughts about yourself. They asked listeners to do the challenge for two weeks and then describe their experiences. They had so many great responses that they picked multiple winners. They also had some of the winners appear on the podcast to talk about the challenge.
